Where it grows
This species, Fuchsia coccinea, is from the Atlantic forests of Brazil. Most fuchsias come from Central and South America, with a few species in New Zealand and Tahiti. They like cool, humid shade and dislike strong heat.
How it came to India
Fuchsias are native mainly to Central and South America. After European botanists described and cultivated them, intense 19th-century breeding produced the showy hybrids now recognised in gardens. Those plants reached India through colonial botanical networks, nurseries and hill-station gardening. They found suitable conditions in places with cool, mild summers rather than in the hot plains. The broad route is well understood, but a single first Indian plant, importer or date is not securely documented, so the story is best told as a gradual horticultural introduction.
Where to find it in India
Fuchsias are a hill-station favourite. Hanging baskets of them brighten gardens in Ooty, Kodaikanal, Darjeeling, Shimla and Shillong. In the plains they struggle through the hot months but can be kept in cool, shaded spots.
Season and blooming time
Fuchsias flower from spring into autumn where summers remain mild. In India they perform best in shaded hill gardens; heat, dry wind and harsh afternoon sun shorten their flowering period.
In culture
The plant was named in honour of Leonhart Fuchs, a 16th-century German botanist, so strictly it should be said "fooks-ia", though almost everyone says "fyoo-sha". The colour fuchsia, and the 19th-century dye fuchsine, are both named after the flower.
History and symbolism
The genus was named in honour of the German botanist Leonhart Fuchs. Its hanging, dancer-like flowers became fashionable in the Victorian era and came to suggest elegance, refined taste and the confidence to stand out.
The story behind this flower
Around 1696, the French monk and botanist Charles Plumier was exploring the Caribbean island of Hispaniola when he found a shrub with drooping, scarlet, earring-like flowers. When he published it in 1703, he named it Fuchsia in honour of Leonhart Fuchs, a German physician who had died more than a century earlier and whose beautifully illustrated herbal of 1542 had helped turn plant study into a science. Fuchs never saw the flower that carries his name. Fuchsias reached European gardens in the late 1700s and became a Victorian obsession, with thousands of varieties bred for hanging baskets. Then, in 1859, a French chemist created a vivid purple-red synthetic dye and called it fuchsine after the flower; the colour "fuchsia" followed. So the flower named after a scholar became the name of a colour, a dye and, eventually, a fashion staple: proof that good taste, the fuchsia's meaning, can travel a long way.
