Where it grows
The sulphur rose comes from south-west Asia, around Turkey, Iran and the Caucasus, and its double form was grown in Persian and Ottoman gardens for centuries before reaching Europe. For a long time Europe had almost no truly yellow roses. Most of today's yellow garden roses descend from another west Asian species, Rosa foetida, which French breeders crossed into garden roses around 1900.
How it came to India
The yellow rose shown here, Rosa hemisphaerica, belongs to a group associated with West and Central Asia. Yellow roses likely reached Indian gardens through the same long Persian and Central Asian exchange that carried many ornamental and fragrant plants, but a precise first date is not securely documented. Later European nursery trade brought additional yellow cultivars and hybrids. Indian growers then selected and managed roses for very different conditions—from cool northern winters to protected cultivation near major cities—so the modern yellow rose in India reflects both old garden exchange and newer breeding.
Where to find it in India
Yellow roses are grown wherever other roses are, from home gardens in the plains (best from October to March) to the cut-flower farms around Pune and Bengaluru. Florists across India stock them all year, and demand peaks around Friendship Day in August.
Season and blooming time
Yellow roses flower most generously in cool, bright weather. Across much of India, the main season runs from October to March; in cooler hill regions they bloom from spring into early summer.
In culture
In India, yellow is the colour of Basant Panchami and new beginnings, so yellow flowers suit fresh starts. The American folk song "The Yellow Rose of Texas" made the flower famous in the United States.
History and symbolism
Early yellow garden roses reached Europe from Southwest Asia in the 18th century. Older flower dictionaries sometimes linked yellow with jealousy, but modern gifting culture has largely transformed it into the colour of friendship, sunshine and cheerful support.
The story behind this flower
For most of history, European gardens had no truly yellow garden rose. The yellow came from western Asia: wild roses like Rosa foetida and the double sulphur rose shown here grew in Persian and Ottoman gardens long before they reached Europe, and they stubbornly refused to cross with European roses. The breakthrough came in Lyon, France. The rose breeder Joseph Pernet-Ducher spent years crossing garden roses with the "Persian Yellow" form of Rosa foetida, and in 1900 he released 'Soleil d'Or', "golden sun". It brought true yellow, orange and flame tones into modern roses for the first time, and nearly every yellow rose sold today descends from that line. The gift came with a catch: the same Persian ancestry made the new roses prone to black spot, a fungal disease gardeners still fight. So a yellow rose is, quite literally, a friendship between two worlds: an Asian wild rose and a French garden, brought together by patience.
