Where it grows

The cultivated apple descends mainly from wild apples in the Tian Shan mountains of Central Asia, in today's Kazakhstan. Traders on the Silk Road carried apples west, and they are now grown in cool climates all over the world.

How it came to India

Apples have a much older Indian history than the modern commercial orchard. Apples and related fruits were known across the Himalayan and Central Asian cultural zone for centuries, and Kashmir already had established apple growing before recent varieties arrived. A major modern turning point came in the early 20th century, when Samuel Evans Stokes introduced American Delicious-type apples to Himachal Pradesh and encouraged orchard cultivation. He did not bring the first apple to India, but his work helped reshape the hill economy. Today’s blossom season joins that older Himalayan heritage with modern commercial horticulture.

Where to find it in India

India's apple orchards bloom in March and April. In Kashmir it's Shopian and Sopore, in Himachal Pradesh Shimla, Kullu and Kinnaur, and there are orchards in Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh too. The Himachal apple industry grew from orchards planted near Kotgarh in the early 20th century by Samuel Evans Stokes.

Season and blooming time

Apple trees flower in spring shortly after winter dormancy. In India, blossoms usually appear from March to April across Himalayan orchards, varying with altitude, variety and winter chill.

In culture

Apple blossom is the state flower of Michigan and Arkansas in the United States. In Kashmir and Himachal, orchards in full bloom draw visitors every spring.

History and symbolism

Apple blossom has long represented promise because every flower may become fruit. In Celtic and European stories the apple was linked with love, youth and enchanted islands, while orchard communities read a generous bloom as a hopeful sign for the year’s harvest.

The story behind this flower

The apple's story begins in the Tian Shan mountains of Central Asia, where wild apple forests still grow on the slopes above Almaty in Kazakhstan. Seeds and fruit travelled along the Silk Road, and over thousands of years traders and farmers carried the best trees west and east. In India, the apple's modern story is surprisingly recent and personal. In 1904 a young American, Samuel Evans Stokes, came to India to work with leprosy patients and settled in the hills of Kotgarh, near Shimla. Seeing how poor the hill farmers were, he brought in American apple varieties, including the Delicious, and planted orchards around 1916, convincing neighbours to follow. Stokes later joined India's freedom movement, took the name Satyanand Stokes, and spent the rest of his life in Himachal. The orchards he started grew into one of the state's most important industries. So when Himachal's hills turn white and pink each spring, the blossom carries a story of hope that took root and grew.

Did you know?

  • Apple buds are pink and open into mostly white flowers.

  • Wild apple forests still grow in the mountains of Kazakhstan.
